Frequently Asked Questions
Tax Preparation:
1. How does virtual tax preparation work?
Our tax preparers all work from their home offices to provide top notch tax and accounting services. The first step in working with one of our preparers is to schedule a call on their calendar. Our intro call will review your tax needs, what documents we’ll need to finish the return, walk through our process, and finish with a price estimate for your return. You’ll get a follow up email that will have your client portal login information, and a review of what documents we need to complete your return. If you have any questions along the way, you’re always welcome to email your tax preparer. As soon as documents are securely uploaded through the client portal, a simple email that you’ve uploaded everything to your preparer lets us know to get started. Most returns are finished within 4-6 business days, and our pricing allows a rush to be put on the work if it needs to be done sooner. Once the return is ready for review, we send over a video walkthrough to review your return with you. This video recording helps our clients understand their taxes while making sure they are accurate before signing and sending them in. Once a client is happy with their return, they are able to sign the return and pay for it to be filed all through their client portal.
2. Do I need to have my documents ready before talking with a tax preparer?
Documents do not need to be ready/with you before the introduction call. Many of our clients like to speak with us early in the tax season before they have their documents, or simply want to make sure that they have a good list before seeking out the documents. Our intro call is designed to walk through any questions that you may have about your taxes and have your preparer review your tax situation for necessary documents. After speaking with a tax preparer, we’ll give you a list of the tax documents that we’ll need to complete your return. We wait for our clients to gather all the documents, submit them, and let us know that they are ready to have their taxes started.
3. Is the portal secure?
Our client portal is integrated with our tax software Drake. Drake Portals is protected by tough, industry-standard security measures. All transmissions are secure, and files are encrypted at rest on the server. You’re able to send files to your preparer, sign your return, pay for your tax prep, and send a secure message to your tax preparer all through the same portal. We will also upload any necessary documents and your finished tax return when they are completed to the portal for you.
4. How long does it take for the tax return to be finished?
Our standard is 4-6 business days to have a tax return ready for review after a client asks us to start working on it. Sometimes documents are missing, or other items are needed, thus prolonging the time to completion. Generally returns are finished within the 4-6 business day time span, with many returns getting done much faster in January/February when our firm hasn’t hit our busiest point of the season. If you need your taxes finished within a business day for any reason, you can ask for a rush to be put on the return for a $250 added fee.
5. When do I pay?
Payment is after the return has been finished, but before we process it to the IRS. We wait for a signature and payment from the client before efiling the return and uploading a copy to the client’s portal. Both the signature and bill can be accessed through the client portal.
6. How does pricing work?
Pricing is based on the amount of time it takes us to complete the return, forms required, and timing of filing. We do offer discounts for returns that are completed before March 1st. To view our full pricing, sign up for a call with one of our tax preparers and you’ll be emailed a copy of our pricing sheet to estimate your total tax prep cost. On the introduction tax call we will review which documents that you need and provide a price estimate (which will also be emailed in a follow up after the call).
7. Can I make changes before submitting the final return?
If items are missing before filing the return, we must wait for those to be added to the return before filing it. We wait for a final signature and payment before submitting your return to the IRS, so in the event of last minute changes, we are able to support the client. If there are changes that need to be made after a return is filed, a small admin charge covers the cost to submit an amended return to fix the corrections.
8. What if I have questions after my taxes are filed?
You can always email your tax preparer year round. We generally reply back within a business day or two for emails and clients can always schedule a call with their tax preparer to set aside time to chat. We love connecting with our clients and helping make sure their taxes are easy, understandable, and that we can get the most beneficial outcome for them. Clients that have their bookkeeping, payroll, or other accounting services through us will generally connect with their tax preparer multiple times throughout the year.
9. If I have a business, what are other services that you offer?
Tax preparation has been the core of our business for years, and we are happy to announce bookkeeping, payroll, and entity creation services. We work with our small business owners to ensure they are saving as much money on taxes as possible through our tax strategies. We like to start with working on the tax return to begin building out a holistic approach to saving taxes. Bookkeeping is the backbone of every business, and we LOVE working with numbers.
